Halton Pharmacy is a proud approved training provider for the NHS Foundation Trainee Pharmacist Programme, the national framework that qualifies pharmacy graduates to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and begin practising as pharmacists.
Our programme is one of the most clinically rich foundation training experiences in the Leeds area, combining 26 weeks of community pharmacy practice at Halton Pharmacy with 26 weeks embedded within a GP practice at Meanwood Group Practice. We have been delivering this integrated programme for nine consecutive years.
Applications are made through the NHS national recruitment platform, Oriel, not directly to the pharmacy. See the How to Apply section below for full details.
The Foundation Trainee Pharmacist Programme (formerly known as the pre-registration year) is a mandatory, GPhC-regulated training year that all pharmacy graduates must complete before they can register as a pharmacist. It is a paid, 52-week employment-based programme delivered by approved training providers across England, Wales, and Scotland.
Programmes are advertised nationally and recruited to through Oriel, the NHS national recruitment system, the same platform used to recruit trainee doctors and dentists. You apply once, complete national assessments, and preference the training providers you would like to work with.

Halton Pharmacy is an award-winning independent pharmacy with an extensive NHS contract portfolio and a strong reputation for clinical service delivery. As a trainee here, you will be an active clinical contributor, not just an observer, from your first week.
Vaccination training is a highlight of the community placement. You will be trained and signed off to deliver vaccinations, a genuinely career-defining clinical skill that builds patient-facing confidence early.
Meanwood Group Practice is a large, established teaching practice where you will experience the evolving role of the clinical pharmacist in primary care first-hand. This is an active, hands-on placement, not observation.
This programme is designed for trainee pharmacists who want a genuinely clinical foundation year. It is a strong fit if you:
All Foundation Trainee Pharmacist places in England are recruited through Oriel, the NHS national recruitment platform. There is no direct route to applying to Halton Pharmacy outside of this scheme.
