Travellers to areas where hepatitis A is endemic; people at increased clinical risk including those with chronic liver disease; and anyone who wishes to be protected.
Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver and is spread through contaminated food and water. It is prevalent in many parts of the world including South Asia, Africa, Central and South America, and parts of Eastern Europe. For most healthy adults, Hepatitis A causes an unpleasant but self-limiting illness; however, it can be more severe in those with underlying liver conditions. Vaccination provides effective protection and is recommended for travellers to endemic regions. A single initial dose provides protection for approximately one year, with a booster dose at six to twelve months extending protection for up to twenty-five years. NHS vaccination is available for some groups. Please ask our team about eligibility.

Alongside vaccination, food and water hygiene is essential in reducing your risk of Hepatitis A infection while travelling. Avoid drinking tap water or consuming ice made from tap water in high-risk areas, and eat only thoroughly cooked foods from reputable sources. Shellfish, particularly when raw or undercooked, can be a source of hepatitis A and should be avoided. Hepatitis A typically causes jaundice, fatigue, nausea, and abdominal discomfort, appearing two to six weeks after exposure. While most people recover fully, the illness can be debilitating and last for several weeks. If you develop symptoms suggestive of hepatitis A, contact your GP and inform them of your recent travel.
NHS-funded hepatitis A vaccination is available for some at-risk groups, such as those with chronic liver disease or those travelling to certain regions as part of their work. Please ask our team to confirm your eligibility.
A single initial dose is sufficient for short-term protection. A booster at six to twelve months provides long-term immunity of approximately twenty-five years.
Ideally at least two weeks before departure to allow time for immunity to develop, though some protection may occur sooner.
Common side effects include a sore arm and mild fatigue. Serious reactions are rare.
Yes. A combined hepatitis A and B vaccine (Twinrix) is available and may be suitable if you require both. Please discuss this with our team.
