Adults and children aged 12 years and over presenting with symptoms of acute sinusitis
Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses, most commonly caused by a viral infection following a cold. Symptoms include facial pain or pressure, nasal congestion, thick nasal discharge, and reduced sense of smell. Most cases of sinusitis are self-limiting and resolve without antibiotic treatment. Under the Pharmacy First service, our pharmacist can assess sinusitis in eligible patients, provide advice on self-care measures, and, where specific clinical criteria are met, prescribe appropriate treatment. If symptoms are severe, prolonged, or suggest a bacterial infection requiring further assessment, we will refer appropriately.

While most sinusitis is benign and self-limiting, it is important to recognise when symptoms may indicate a more serious problem. Seek urgent medical attention if you experience severe headache, stiff neck, visual changes, confusion, significant facial swelling, or a temperature that is very high or not responding to treatment. These could indicate complications of sinusitis, such as orbital or intracranial infection, which are medical emergencies. Do not ignore symptoms that are rapidly worsening or significantly different from a typical cold. If in doubt, contact NHS 111 or your GP promptly.
Yes. The Pharmacy First sinusitis service is NHS-funded at no cost to eligible patients.
Most cases of sinusitis are viral and do not require antibiotics. Our pharmacist will assess your symptoms and follow NHS clinical guidelines when considering treatment.
Paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain relief, adequate hydration, steam inhalation, and saline nasal rinses can all help relieve symptoms.
You should see your GP if symptoms are severe, worsening after initial improvement, lasting more than ten days without improvement, or if you develop a high fever, visual disturbance, or severe headache.
The Pharmacy First sinusitis service covers patients aged 12 years and over.
