Adults and children aged 5 years and over presenting with an acute sore throat
Sore throats are one of the most common reasons people visit their GP, yet the vast majority are caused by viral infections and resolve without antibiotic treatment. Under the Pharmacy First service, our pharmacist can assess sore throats in eligible patients using a validated clinical scoring tool to determine whether there is a likelihood of bacterial infection and whether antibiotic treatment may be appropriate. We will also advise on effective self-care measures to relieve symptoms. If the presentation suggests a more serious condition, or if your child is very young or unwell, we will refer you appropriately.

Although most sore throats are straightforward viral infections, a small number can develop into serious conditions. Quinsy (peritonsillar abscess) is a complication of tonsillitis that causes severe one-sided throat pain, drooling, and difficulty opening the mouth. This requires urgent medical attention. Epiglottitis, though now rare due to vaccination, is a life-threatening inflammation of the epiglottis that causes severe difficulty breathing and swallowing, and requires emergency medical treatment. Streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat), if left untreated, can in rare cases lead to rheumatic fever. If you have any concerns about the severity of you or your child's symptoms, do not hesitate to contact NHS 111, your GP, or emergency services as appropriate.

No. Most sore throats are viral and will not respond to antibiotics. Our pharmacist will assess whether antibiotic treatment is likely to be beneficial in your case.
Paracetamol or ibuprofen can help with pain and temperature. Warm drinks with honey and lemon, throat lozenges, and adequate rest and fluids are also helpful.
Seek emergency help if you have significant difficulty swallowing or breathing, drooling, swelling of the throat or face, or a muffled voice, as these could indicate a serious complication such as a peritonsillar abscess.
