About this service

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection spread by the bite of infected ticks found in forested areas across parts of Europe, Russia, and Asia. It can cause inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) and, in severe cases, long-term neurological complications. There is no specific antiviral treatment for TBE, making prevention through vaccination and tick avoidance the most important protective strategies. The TBE vaccine is given as a three-dose course and is recommended for travellers who will be spending time in endemic rural or forested areas. Our travel health team will assess your itinerary to determine whether vaccination is appropriate.

Tick Bite Prevention While Travelling

Ticks are found in long grass, undergrowth, and woodland, particularly in rural and forested areas during warmer months. To reduce your risk, wear long trousers tucked into socks, use DEET-based insect repellent on exposed skin, and check your skin carefully for ticks after being outdoors. If you find a tick, remove it promptly using fine-tipped tweezers, grasping as close to the skin as possible and pulling steadily upward. Do not twist or crush the tick, and avoid applying heat or petroleum jelly. After removal, clean the area with soap and water or antiseptic. If you develop a rash, flu-like symptoms, or neurological symptoms after a tick bite, seek medical attention promptly and inform your doctor of the exposure.
