Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common, particularly in women, and cause symptoms including a burning sensation when passing urine, increased frequency or urgency of urination, and lower abdominal discomfort. Under the Pharmacy First service, our pharmacist can assess eligible women and, where clinically appropriate, prescribe antibiotic treatment for uncomplicated UTIs without the need for a GP appointment. This service is for adult women aged 16 to 64 without complicating factors. If your symptoms suggest a more complex UTI, kidney involvement, or if you fall outside the eligibility criteria, we will refer you to your GP.

Most lower UTIs in women are straightforward and respond well to antibiotic treatment. However, if infection spreads to the kidneys (pyelonephritis), symptoms become significantly more serious, including loin or back pain, high fever, nausea, and vomiting. This requires urgent GP assessment and may need hospital treatment. Men with UTI symptoms should see their GP, as UTIs in men are less common and may have an underlying cause such as prostatitis. Pregnant women with any UTI symptoms should contact their midwife or GP promptly. If you experience any symptoms of sepsis, including very high or low temperature, rapid breathing, confusion, or extreme fatigue, call 999 or go to A&E immediately.
Yes. The Pharmacy First UTI service is NHS-funded at no cost to eligible patients.
The service is currently available for women aged 16 to 64 with symptoms of an uncomplicated lower UTI. Men, pregnant women, and those with recurrent or complicated UTIs are not eligible and should contact their GP.
Our pharmacist will advise on whether a urine sample is required. In some cases, clinical assessment alone is sufficient.
If symptoms do not improve after completing a course of antibiotics, or if they worsen, contact your GP. A different antibiotic or further investigation may be needed.
Stay well hydrated, urinate after sexual intercourse, wipe front to back, and avoid tight synthetic underwear. Speak to your GP if UTIs are frequent, as further investigation may be needed.
