Health Considerations During Hajj and Umrah

Hajj is one of the largest mass gatherings in the world, bringing together millions of pilgrims from across the globe. The intense heat of Saudi Arabia, particularly during summer months, combined with large crowds and significant physical exertion can place considerable demands on the body, particularly for older pilgrims and those with pre-existing health conditions. Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are significant risks. Ensure you drink regularly, avoid direct sun during peak hours, and wear loose, light-coloured clothing. Respiratory infections spread easily in crowded conditions. Wearing a face covering in crowds can reduce risk. Carry an adequate supply of all regular medicines, with copies of prescriptions in English and Arabic if possible, and take out comprehensive travel insurance that covers your medical needs. If you feel unwell during pilgrimage, seek help from the medical teams stationed throughout the holy sites.

Frequently asked questions

Is Meningitis ACWY vaccination compulsory for Hajj and Umrah?

Yes. Saudi Arabia requires a valid Meningitis ACWY vaccination certificate issued within the last three years as a mandatory condition for Hajj and Umrah visas.

We recommend ensuring you are up to date with routine vaccinations including flu, MMR, and Covid-19 for eligible groups. Hepatitis A and B may also be recommended. Our team will advise based on your vaccination history.

We recommend booking as early as possible, ideally at least six to eight weeks before travel, as some vaccinations require multiple doses or a certificate to be issued in advance.

We can provide most vaccinations required for Hajj and Umrah. Please contact us in advance to confirm current availability.

Stay well hydrated, avoid peak sun hours, wear appropriate clothing, maintain hand hygiene, and carry sufficient supplies of any regular medicines. Our team will provide comprehensive pre-travel advice during your consultation.
