About this service

Meningococcal disease, caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, can cause bacterial meningitis and septicaemia, both potentially life-threatening conditions. The meningitis ACWY vaccine protects against four strains of the bacterium: A, C, W, and Y. NHS vaccination is routinely offered to teenagers and first-year university students, and to travellers going on Hajj, for whom it is a mandatory entry requirement for Saudi Arabia. Private vaccination is available for those who missed the NHS programme or who require vaccination for other reasons. Our team will assess your vaccination history and advise on whether this vaccine is appropriate for you.

What to expect

A brief health assessment to confirm your vaccination history and suitability for the vaccine.

Administration of the meningitis ACWY vaccine by a qualified vaccinator.

Advice on the duration of protection and whether additional vaccines such as meningitis B may also be recommended.

Documentation of your vaccination, which may be required for travel to certain countries.

Recognising and Responding to Meningitis

Bacterial meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia are medical emergencies that can deteriorate rapidly. The classic glass test, pressing a glass against a red or purple rash, and if it does not fade this may indicate septicaemia, is a well-known warning sign, but other symptoms should not be ignored even without a rash. Early symptoms can be similar to flu, so vigilance is essential, particularly in young people and following recent close contact with a confirmed case. If you suspect meningitis or meningococcal disease in yourself or someone else, call 999 without delay. Vaccination significantly reduces but cannot eliminate the risk of this devastating illness.

Frequently asked questions

Is meningitis ACWY vaccination free on the NHS?

NHS vaccination is offered to teenagers and eligible first-year university students. It is also available for eligible travellers on the NHS in some circumstances. Private vaccination is available for those not eligible for NHS provision.

Yes. A valid meningitis ACWY certificate, issued within the last three years, is a mandatory requirement for visa applications for Hajj and Umrah in Saudi Arabia.

No. The meningitis ACWY vaccine does not cover the B strain of meningococcal disease. A separate meningitis B vaccine (Bexsero or Trumenba) is required for B-strain protection.

Protection from the meningitis ACWY vaccine generally lasts for approximately five years, after which a booster may be needed for those with ongoing risk.

Symptoms of bacterial meningitis include severe headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, high fever, vomiting, and a characteristic non-blanching rash. If you suspect meningitis, call 999 immediately.
