Adults and children aged 1 year and over presenting with signs of a mildly infected insect bite
Insect bites are extremely common and usually cause only minor local irritation. However, in some cases, a bite can become infected, resulting in redness, swelling, warmth, pain, and occasionally discharge. The Pharmacy First service enables our pharmacist to assess infected insect bites and, where clinically appropriate, provide antibiotic treatment under NHS-approved clinical protocols. If there are signs of a more severe infection or spreading cellulitis, we will refer the patient appropriately. Our pharmacist will also advise on self-care measures to manage symptoms and prevent further infection.

The best way to manage insect bites is to prevent them in the first place, particularly when in areas where biting insects are prevalent. Use insect repellents containing DEET on exposed skin, wear long-sleeved clothing in the evenings, and use mosquito nets where appropriate. If bitten, avoid scratching, as this increases the risk of infection. Clean the bite with soap and water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. In the UK, tick bites carry a risk of Lyme disease; when travelling to tick-prone areas of Europe or Asia, tick-borne encephalitis is an additional risk to consider. A distinctive expanding rash around a tick bite should prompt urgent GP review. Some insect bites can also cause severe allergic reactions. If you develop swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or feel faint after a bite, call 999 immediately.
Signs of infection include increasing redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, and possibly discharge or streaking from the bite site. A fever may also be present in more significant infections.
