Many people in Leeds don’t realise that a full cardiovascular and metabolic health check is available right here at Halton Pharmacy on Selby Road, with no GP referral, no NHS appointment, and no waiting list.

At our Heart and Metabolic Health Hub, we provide a structured assessment covering blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, body composition, and your overall cardiovascular risk score, all in a single appointment.

This article explains exactly what the assessment involves, who it’s for, and what happens afterwards.

Who This Assessment Is For

This assessment is appropriate for any adult who wants to understand their cardiovascular and metabolic risk proactively. It’s particularly worth considering if you’re:

  • Over 40 and haven’t had a recent NHS health check
  • Someone with a family history of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol
  • Aware you have one risk factor, such as high blood pressure or raised cholesterol, but haven’t had a full, joined up assessment
  • Overweight, or carrying significant fat around your middle
  • Someone your GP has advised to keep an eye on your cardiovascular risk factors between appointments

What the Assessment Includes

Blood pressure measurement Taken using a clinically validated device. If your reading is raised, we’ll discuss whether 24 hour ABPM monitoring would help confirm your true underlying pattern.

Cholesterol and HbA1c testing A simple fingerprick blood sample gives us your full cholesterol profile (total, LDL, HDL, non-HDL, and triglycerides), plus your HbA1c blood sugar level.

Body composition assessment Your height, weight, BMI, and waist circumference are measured and explained in the context of your overall metabolic risk.

Cardiovascular risk score Using validated assessment tools, we calculate your estimated 10 year cardiovascular risk, and explain clearly what that means for your health.

What Happens During Your Appointment

The assessment typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. You’ll be seen by a clinically trained member of our pharmacy team, in a private consultation room.

  • All measurements are taken during the appointment
  • Blood test results from your fingerprick sample are available during, or shortly after, your visit
  • Your cardiovascular risk score is calculated and explained to you at the time
  • Our team will talk through all your findings clearly, explain what they mean, and advise on any next steps worth taking

What Happens After Your Assessment

If all your results are within normal ranges, we’ll explain this to you reassuringly, and recommend when it’s worth rechecking in future.

If any results suggest a raised risk, we’ll:

  • Explain clearly what the finding means
  • Give you evidence based lifestyle guidance
  • Advise you plainly on when, and how, to involve your GP

Where appropriate, we can also give you a written summary of your findings to take to a GP appointment.

What we don’t do: we don’t diagnose medical conditions. What we do is screen for risk, quantify it clearly, and make sure you have the information and the right path forward to act on what we find.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Heart and Metabolic Health Check typically starts with a discussion about your health, family history, lifestyle and any relevant risk factors. Your pharmacist may then check measurements such as blood pressure, height, weight and waist circumference, and may carry out blood tests to assess cholesterol and blood glucose or diabetes risk. The results are used to build a clearer picture of your cardiovascular and metabolic health.

Depending on the type of check offered, it may include blood pressure measurement, cholesterol testing, blood glucose or diabetes risk assessment, BMI and waist measurement, alongside questions about smoking, alcohol, physical activity, diet, family history and other health factors. These measurements can help identify risk factors for conditions such as heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

After the checks, your pharmacist will explain your results and discuss what they may mean for your future health. If risk factors are identified, you may receive personalised advice about diet, physical activity, weight management, smoking, alcohol or other lifestyle changes. Depending on your results, you may also be advised to arrange further assessment or follow-up with your GP or another healthcare professional.
